OUGD405 Research (Studio Brief Two)

For this brief, we basically have to find a collection and find out 100 facts/stats/photos etc about it. As I don't really collect anything of my own, I decided I would ask my flatmates if they collect anything. One of them collects bottlecaps, which I think would be really interesting to research if I focused it more about alcohol and students. Another one of my flatmates collects ornaments, which I wouldn't really find interesting as I think they just take up unnecessary space. I am going home soon for Christmas, so I think I will look in my room at home and see if I have anything.

I am now at home, and I have looked through my belongings and found out that I subconsciously have been collecting cinema tickets for the past 2 years. However, I still think it would be a lot more interesting to focus my research on bottlecaps as he has quite a lot of really interesting, nicely designed tops.

Seen as his collection is still in Leeds, I am going to do some research over christmas into the facts, opinions, words and statistics.

I have decided I will start with looking into 20 opinions. To do this, I am going to make a very quick questionaire and ask some of my student friends their opinions on drinking.

This is the questionairre I have come up with:

1. How many times a week do you drink?
2. What's your favourite alcoholic drink?
3. Why do you drink?
4. Do you think the drinking age should be highered or lowered?
5. What one word would you use to describe alcohol?

I will publish the results of this questionairre once I have recieved as many back as possible. For now I am going to research into some facts. I assume that there will be an awful lot of facts about alcohol, so for that reason I am going to choose 20 facts that I find quite interesting.

1. A pint of beer contains as many calories as a packet of crisps.
2. There is evidence indicating the preparation of alcohol dating back to 8,000 BC.
3. Alcohol in carbonated beverages is absorbed faster into the body than non-carbonated beverages.
4. The global alcohol industry is expected to exceed $1 trillion in 2014.
5. It takes an average adult around 1 hour to process 10ml of pure alcohol so there is none left in their bloodstream.
6. Alcohol is a depressant, meaning it slows down your bodies responses.
7. Drinking too much alcohol in one session could put you into a coma or even kill you.
8. Alcohol can reduce feelings of anxiety, making you feel more sociable.
9. Alcohol can cause cancer, heart problems, high blood pressure, strokes, liver disease and more.
10. There are three classes of alcohol: beers, wines and spirits.
11. The word 'toast' which meant wishing good health originated in ancient Rome.
12. A soil of a vinyard in France is considered so precious it is a requirement that workers scrape their shoes before they leave.
13. Most people think that alcohol makes them warmer, when in actual fact it makes them cooler.
14. Most vegetables and all fruits contain a small amount of alcohol in them.
15. The pressure in a champagne bottle is 90 pounds per square inch; three times the pressure in car tyres.
16. The worlds oldest known recipe is for beer.
17. The US has the highest minimum drinking age in the world.
18. It is illegal to feed alcohol to Moose in Alaska and fishes in Ohio.
19. In some European countries, McDonalds serves alcohol.
20. The human body produces its own supply of alcohol naturally, 24/7.

I found some of these facts really interesting, especially the obscure ones, such as it's illegal to feed alcohol to a Moose in Alaska. I am now going to look into some alcohol statistics, and maybe into some news reports of alcohol-related crimes and stories.

1. More than 9 Million people in England drink more than the daily recommended units.
2. In England in 2012 there were 6,490 alcohol-related deaths.
3. Alcohol misuse costs England around £21bn in healthcare and crime.
4. Alcohol is 61% more affordable than it was in 1980.
5. The most effective way to reduce alcohol related harm is to increase the price, restrict the physical availability of alcohol, drink-driving counter measures and treatment of drinkers with alcohol dependence.
6. Alcohol is a factor in more than 60 medical conditions, including: mouth, throat, stomach, liver and more.
7. In the UK in 2012-2013, there were 1,008,850 hospital admissions related to alcohol consumption.
8. Males accounted for approximately 65% of all alcohol-related deaths in 2012.
9. Alcohol costs the tax payer approximately £120 a year.
10. Deaths from liver disease have reached record levels, rising by 20% in a decade.
11. The NHS estimates that around 9% of men and 4% of women show signs of alcohol dependency.
12. Only 6.4% of dependent drinkers access treatment in the UK.
13. 20% of violent incidents in 2010-2011 took place in or around a pub or club.
14. Men and women prisoners who reported drinking, daily drank an average of 20 units a day.
15. 193 males and 121 females between 15 and 34 died from alcohol-related causes in 2011 in the UK.
16. In a sample of over 2000 16 year olds, 11% had sex under the influence of alcohol and regretted it.
17. More than 10,000 fines are admitted to 16-19 year olds for being drunk and disorderly a year.
18. Almost half of young people excluded from school are regular drinkers.
19. For everyone £1 invested in specialist alcohol treatment, £5 is saved on health, welfare and crime costs.
20. 40% of clients starting treatment were self-referrals, 18% were referrals from a GP and 8% were onward referals from other substance misuse.

I think these statistics are pretty bleak and boring, and also very worrying as I didn't know it was that easy to die from alcohol. I have finally received enough answers from all the people I asked to fill out the questionnaire. I'm quite glad I asked them which word they would use to describe it as a question, as it took some people so long to reply and I had to ask an awful lot of people to get a decent response. My results are as follows:

1. Twice
2. Vodka + mixer

I think these results are shaping up really nicely and I think it'd be really effective if when I get back to uni, I film my friends talking about their answers and maybe ask a few more. I think this would really work as a video or kind of documentary, and would fit perfectly as I have to make a 2 minute presentation of all of this body of work.

When I get back to Leeds on the Thursday I am going to take some photographs of the bottlecaps, and choose 20 which I think are my favourite. This could also be part of the video, as I could ask my friends to choose one that is their favourite.
